At-Will Employment

First and foremost, IAM members sit down with their managers and negotiate over wages, benefits and more. That’s having a voice on the job. A union-negotiated contract puts rules in place that allow you to do your job without fear of retaliation or unjust treatment. If you feel those rules have been broken, you have the legal right to appeal through a grievance procedure. As a result, everyone is treated with respect.

Being an at-will employee simply means you have no voice.

Your Rights Under RLA

Under the Railway Labor Act (RLA), airline and railroad employees have the federal right to organize, join unions, and bargain collectively without employer interference, coercion, or intimidation.

The RLA protects your right to self-organization, specifically prohibiting carriers from influencing employees, using company funds for anti-union activities, or forcing employees to join a specific union.

The Truth About Unions

One of corporate America’s favorite attacks upon workers seeking a union is “we don’t want a third party to come between us and our employees.” Which translates to “We want to continue doing whatever we want to do to our employees!”

Having a union means bigger paychecks, stronger benefits and better lives!

The Truth About Union Bargaining

Employers might tell you that collective bargaining is a gamble, a risky move where you could lose it all. They label it “bargaining from zero,” suggesting that forming a union could leave you worse off, with your wages, benefits, and conditions at risk.

Your Rights Are Protected: By law, your employer must negotiate in good faith. This means they’re obligated to engage sincerely with your proposals. Any attempt to cut your pay or benefits in retaliation for union activity is downright illegal.
